The Netherlands joined the United Nations on the tenth of December 1945 and is an active participant in UN issues. The Netherlands is the thirteenth highest contributor to the United Nations, providing 1.86% of the gross annual budget. The Netherlands has participated and provided troops for numerous United Nations Peacekeeping Operations around the world including Cyprus, Sudan, Namibia, Angola, Congo, Kosovo, Haiti, Iraq, Mozambique Rwanda and Liberia.

The Permanent Mission to the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations aims to promote the position of the Netherlands in the UN, along with taking part in negotiations, participating in debates and coordinating operations with the UN Secretariat. The Political Affairs section of the Mission is involved with security, legal and financial affairs.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is situated in the Netherlands at Peace Palace in The Hague. The Netherlands is also home to United Nations Sustainable Development Department which has offices in The Hague, at the Department of Economic and Ecological Affairs.

In addition to being a member of the United Nations the Netherlands are also a founding member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Kingdom of the Netherlands is also a founding member of the European Union and a member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
