Israel and the United Nations
Israel has been a member of the United Nations since the 11th of May, 1949. The Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations was established to represent the interest of the Government of Israel to the United Nations. In addition to being a member of the UN, Israel has participated in a number of United Nations commission, bodies and committees including:
- The Commission on Narcotic Drugs
- The United Nations Environment Program
- The Commission on Sustainable Development
- The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law
- The Commission on the Status of Women
- The Commission on Science, Technology and Development
- The United Nations Settlement Program
- The Committee on Information
- The United Nations International Research and Training Institute
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) was established to provide relief and protection to Palestine refugees along with works programs with local governments. UNRWA was set up after the Arab-Israeli conflict in 1948 and its mission is to assist by providing health, education, social services and relief to the five million registered Palestine refugees.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency has five fields of operation: Jordan, the West Bank including East Jerusalem, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Gaza Strip. The United Nations General Assembly has recently extended the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refuges until 2014.
