Canada is an active participant in the United Nations and played an important role in the drafting of the United Nations Charter. Canada is one of the top ten providers of assessed financial contributions, providing 3.207% of the UN budget. Canada has been a major contributor to all activities of the United Nations including human rights, peace and security, environmental, social and economic affairs and development.

Canada has served on the Security Council for twelve years and has contributed to virtually every United Nations peacekeeping mission. Canada has provided troops or peacekeeping contingents for missions into Korea, the Middle East, Congo, West New Guinea, Yemen, Cyprus, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Cambodia, Iraq and El Salvador, Haiti, Bosnia, Ethiopia and Rwanda. In addition, Canada is an elected member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Canadian Lester Bowles Pearson organised the United Nations Emergency Force, for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) was founded in 1946 and its mission is to educate and engage the Canadian people in the work of the UN. UNA-Canada also assists with foreign policies, respond to public requests on the United Nations and contributes to Canadian and global issues.

Canada is also home to the International Civil Aviation Organization and is a specialized agency of the United Nations. In addition to being a charter member of the United Nations, Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
